This Closterium was captured among freshwater algae sample at Brunswick Community College, Aquaculture Facility located in Brunswick County, North Carolina. Photographed March 2, 2007.
Some of the following images were enlarged using microscope and settings enabling further enlargement from digital camera.
Closterium is a desmid, a microscopic green algae that
occurs in all types of freshwater habitats. Desmids are
typically one-celled, though sometimes filamentous or colonial,
and are divided symmetrically into semicells connected at a
central point. Closterium is characterized by a sickle shape
and sometimes contains gypsum crystals.

Actually, I was after the identification of the green algae in the center when I noticed the slinky transparent creature I've been seeing quite a lot of in my freshwater samples.
